7 surest ways to get UNFOLLOWED on Twitter

A few observations on Twitter behavior that might get one un-followed (of course

opinions vary on this):

1. The Gatling-Gun

More than 15 posts a day would qualify as GG.  Share the conversation, don’t hog it.

2. The Multi-Conversationist

Many people on Twitter mistake public replies for Direct Message. There is a direct message function for a reason – to keep one to one conversations one to one. Nothing wrong with an occasional “shout-out”, but if all your tweets are running conversations with 50 people the rest of your followers might get bored and unfollow.

3. The Center of the Universe

This is the Twitter type who posts everything they are doing. Breakfast included. If the focus is all on yourself, you run the risk of getting un-followed. Be generous – share what others are doing, or cool things you have found.

4. The Coded Twitterer

This type uses cryptic acronyms and shortened words, that many cannot decipher.

c u @ prty n #bama nxt wknd. Y not brng yr frd. pls RT

5. The Shameless Self-Promoter

“My seminar is now 25% off for the next 15 people.”   Twitter is an ongoing conversation and aggressive selling is considered rude and interrupts the flow. Nothing wrong with 1% of the time mentioning your new book release or new offering, but day after day – it is grounds for the un-follow.

6. The Downer

Mama used to say “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

7. The Silent Treatment

Your last post was in December 2008. This person rarely gets un-followed per se, but they’re not contributing, so therefore not really being followed anyway.

I like it! This is a good list you have come up with. You’ve covered all the best Twitter faux-pas. I never use Twitter, and have never un-followed anyone, but I have a good enough imagination to know what it would take to get me to un-follow a fool.

Also, in order to help you further the advancement of quality Twitterers, I came up with a number 8 to add to the list: 8. Being plain old dumb and boring.
