Do you know the way to San Jose?

I’m heading west this week. A quick trip to Silicon Valley. I’ll be joining about 250 other people seeking wisdom in our fast-paced, technology-laden lifestyles. It’s the inaugural Wisdom 2.0 Conference…

WisdomLogo“The question for most of us is not if we will use the technologies of our age, from cell phones to social media, the question is how can we do so with mindfulness, meaning, and wisdom?

The Wisdom 2.0 conference is an event that brings together technology leaders from companies such as Google, Facebook, and Twitter, along with Zen teachers, neuroscientists, and others to explore how we can live in greater balance with, and more successfully use, the great technologies of our age.”

I think I might use a Social Media tool to keep my Fans (I mean “Likers”) updated. Follow me on twitter @terrimorrin

A wag of the finger to KFC

Screen shot 2010-04-24 at 3.45.41 PMFirst off, let me say that I am not trying to be holier than thou here.  I’m not the worlds healthiest eater by any means.  I try… I really do, but to act like I’ve never ingested a Big Mac would be a lie.  That being said, I must give a wag of the finger to KFC and their new “Double Down” chicken sandwich.  What is it exactly?  I’ll let the Colonel himself tell you:

The new KFC Double Down sandwich is real! This one-of-a-kind sandwich features two thick and juicy boneless white meat chicken filets (Original Recipe® or Grilled), two pieces of bacon, two melted slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese and Colonel’s Sauce. This product is so meaty, there’s no room for a bun!

Really Colonel Sanders?  Is this what America needs?

You are what you eat so the saying goes.  I agree with that.  I also agree with a point that comedian and social commentator Bill Maher made  about the state of America’s health.  Maher argued that one of the reasons health care costs are so high is because Americans stay sick.  Americans stay sick partly because of the of the food we put into our bodies.  Regardless of facade that fast food companies have put up for us recently of “healthy menu choices”,  Colonel Sanders and all the rest of them want you to get sick, because they want you to eat this sandwich and all the other ridiculous meat, cheese and more meat and cheese combinations they have come up with.  Why? because it makes them money…

So if you are what you eat as I said before, then I’m a fish taco from Mamacitas, the best fish taco in Asheville and official fish taco of integritive, and if you ever see me eating a Double Down chicken sandwich from KFC, right after you make me eat a bunch of crow… just go ahead and shoot me.

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day everyone! Today is a great day to focus on the things we can do in our individual lives to help the environment. Plant a tree, pick up some trash, remember your reusable shopping bags and coffee mugs, walk to lunch instead of driving – every little bit helps. Now might even be a good time to start thinking about the bigger projects you can participate in – install solar panels at your home or office, see what your schools are doing to save energy and resources, get involved with the city’s Sustainability Advisory Committee.

I found this cool story about places that are turning the kinetic energy from people walking and dancing into useable electric energy to power lights and other things! http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/discoblog/2010/04/15/europes-newest-green-energy-sources-pedestrians-and-body-heat/ This is just one example of modifying something that we’re already using (sidewalks or dance floors) and increase their usefulness with ‘green’ technology.

What other ideas are out there, just waiting to be discovered (or funded)? Let’s figure out how to get the many creative people and ideas linked up with the resources they need to move forward.

The Mountain Xpress has an article this week with a full list of ways to celebrate Earth Day in and around Asheville: http://www.mountainx.com/news/2010/042110earth_first

And remember – Every day is Earth Day!

What’s not to “Like” about Facebook?

I feel like Sally Field….”You like me! You like me! You really like me!”

Here’s what Facebook has to say about it:
Why did “Become a Fan” change to “Like”?
To improve your experience and promote consistency across the site, we’ve changed the language for Pages from “Fan” to “Like.” We believe this change offers you a more light-weight and standard way to connect with people, things and topics in which you are interested.

What does it mean to “Like” a Page?
When you click “Like” on a Page, you are making a connection to that Page. The Page will be displayed in your profile, and in turn, you will be displayed on the Page as a person who likes that Page. The Page will also be able to post content into your News Feed.

Is there a difference between “Liking” an item a friend posts and “Liking” a Page?
Yes. Liking a Page means you are connecting to that Page. When you connect to a Page, it will appear in your profile and you will appear on the Page as a person who likes that Page. The Page will also be able to post content into your News Feed. On the other hand, when you click “Like” on a piece of content that a friend posts, you are simply letting your friend know that you like it without leaving a comment.
