TEDActive 2010 :: recount

As I settled into my seat on Flight 303 from Denver to Charlotte, the second of a three legged journey home, I reflected on the events of the past 4+ days at TEDActive in Palm Springs, CA.4350914314_7b935c5b00

Nothing can prepare one for the energy, passion, and curiosity of multiplied amplitude when that many great thinkers come together to listen to the world class speakers sharing the 18 minute talk of their life on their idea worth sharing. Most of us left very open and in a state of sorting out the events of the almost mythical experience.

Best way to describe it is imagine opening your mouth and a fire-hydrant is turned on full blast, only the mouth is your mind and water are poignant ideas delivered by both attendees and speakers alike.

Mental toughness means adjusting to adversity

The term mental toughness typically conjures up images of teeth-gnashing, resistance-thrashing willpower in response to a difficult challenge.xin_381002081206518160002

But in business and in life, mental toughness is more about seeing opportunities where others see barriers and successfully adapting to circumstances to come out ahead.

Making decisions

Most successful business leaders have hundreds of decisions to make daily or weekly, and most of them are important.

Mentally tough leaders make decisions very quickly, relying on intuition and clear-minded purpose. Then they stick to those decisions, rarely changing them even when a positive result is not immediately forthcoming.

Faith in sound decision-making gives these leaders confidence that the seeds they plant will eventually bear fruit. They don’t uproot those seeds and replant again and again.

My Eulogy :: circa Summer 1999

Generally eulogies are written by other folks after someone else has died. In the summer of 1999 I was on a climbing trip to Spain, France and the UK – I got word that one of my climbing buddies back home had died @ Seneca Rock in West Virginia.

I thought deeply about the fragility of life and decided it would be good to compose a sincere good-bye to friends and family in case the unthinkable would happen.
